창신동 회오리 마당은 창신동을 휘돌아 흐르는 회오리길의 중간지점에 위치한 구옥을 리모델링하여 주민공동시설로 이용하고자하는데서 프로젝트가 시작되었다. 현장조사 및 안전성검토등을 통하여 기존 건물을 사용 하는 것이 불가능 하다고 판단되어 신축으로 계획 변경하여 진행을 하였다. 창신동 회오리 마당은 지역주민과의 워크숍을 통하여 주민의 다양한 의견을 청취하고 이를 반영 하는 방식으로 진행 되었기에 약 1년여의 설계기간을 통하여 착공을 할 수 있었고 건축물의 규모 및 기능들이 일부 변화되기도 하였다. 건물의 배치는 회오리 길과 대지 남측의 골목을 이어주는 공공 보행 통로를 제공 하여 보행자 흐름을 원할히 해주는데서 출발하였다. 또한 대지 남측 원경으로 보이는 동대문으로의 뷰를 열고 풍경을 회오리 길로 연결하기 위하여 작은 건축물임에도 두 개의 매스를 수직적으로 배치하고 중앙부를 개방 하는 형태로 계획 하였다. 개방된 부분은 아래로는 공공보행통로가 설치되고 2층에는 마을마당이 설치 되어 동네의 다양한 활동을 담아낼 수 있도록 하였다. 정면의 우측으로는 계단을 수직적으로 배치하여 회오리길에서의 인지성을 갖도록 하였고 좌측의 건축물은 동네에 어울리도록 순수한 박공형태로 계획 하였다. 1층에서 2층으로 이어지는 보행흐름은 3층의 마당까지 이어져 남측으로 열린뷰를 제공하고 회오리길의 거친 흐름이 쉬어 가는 작은 쉼터가 되도록 하였다. 또한 남측의 골목으로 이어지는 공공보행로는 통로일 뿐만이 아닌 작은 쉼터이자 다양한 이야기를 담는 장소로 자리매김 하길 바란다. 건물의 재료는 저층부는 노출콘크리트로 마감하여 주변의 풍경과 어울리도록 하였고 기능적 매스는 흰색 스터코 마감으로 밝은 이미지를 부여하고 큰 창문을 통하여 거리의 풍경을 담아 낸다.
